The most common way of gaining points is by participating in class discussions and doing homework.
The way to gain the most house points at once is tournaments.
You can also challenge someone to a wizarding duel.
Then other random reasons that come along...

What do you guys think about Valtor having an eBay account? You could buy bumper stickers, notebooks, writing pads, and all sorts of fun stuff with Valtor on them.
